Professional liability insurance for EKU clinical courses
EKU requires professional liability insurance (PLI) for its clinical practicum courses, and its handbooks say you buy it through Eastern Kentucky University rather than on your own. You register for it once per coverage year, the charge lands on your tuition and fees bill, and your faculty need to see proof of it before your first clinical day. What EKU requires, in its own words
The latest MSN Student Handbook EKU made public, the 2021-22 edition (readable today only through a web archive), states the rule without hedging: "Professional Liability insurance for all concentrations must be purchased through Eastern Kentucky University." That reaches FNP and PMHNP students in the MSN and in both post-MSN certificates, since EKU's catalog applies every MSN policy to certificate students.
Newer documents keep the requirement alive. EKU's 2023 curriculum plans for the PMHNP and FNP tracks carry the line "Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) is required for clinical practicum courses." The archived DNP handbook (revised June 2020) lists PLI through EKU among the conditions for DNP Experience Hours, and the 2026-27 undergraduate catalog puts liability insurance bought through EKU on the clinical clearance list for on-campus BSN students.
Every EKU source points the same way, so treat PLI as a standing condition of any clinical course. Because the handbook is several editions old, confirm the current mechanics with your faculty or program coordinator before you register.
The coverage year, and why the dates trip students up
Coverage runs from August 15 to August 14, and the handbook says it is not pro-rated. You register for it once per coverage year using its CRN, much as you would add a class, and the charge is billed with your tuition and fees. Your EKU account statement or Big E Central, EKU's office for billing and registration help, can confirm the current charge.
Those fixed dates interact with EKU's calendar. Fall 2026 classes begin August 24, nine days after a new coverage year opens, so a student whose clinical work continues into fall needs the new year's registration done before the first fall clinical day. Summer runs the other way: summer 2026 ran May 18 to August 7, inside the coverage year that began the previous August. With no pro-rating, a policy registered in May still ends on August 14, and a fall clinical needs the next year's registration.
The simple habit: whenever you plan a clinical course, write down which coverage year its dates fall in, and whether they cross August 14.
When proof of coverage has to be ready
Coverage must be in force, and provable, before your first clinical day in each course. Built from the archived handbook's rules, the order that works looks like this:
- Register for the right coverage yearAdd the PLI CRN for the year that contains your clinical dates, and register again if the course runs past August 14.

What the policy reaches, and where it stops
The handbook limits the policy to "only clinical experiences which are part of scheduled classes." Time with a preceptor is covered when it belongs to a clinical course you are registered for, inside that course's dates.
Three situations follow from that wording. An informal day at a site before the term opens, say to meet a new preceptor's team, sits outside a scheduled class. Hours you hope to finish after a course ends should be cleared with your faculty first, so they stay attached to a course. And the policy ends when you withdraw or graduate, so a break in enrollment ends the coverage with it. EKU's DNP handbook reaches the same place from another direction, holding DNP Experience Hours back until the semester has started and the onboarding paperwork is finished (DNP hours).
Holding your own malpractice policy, or being covered through your employer, does not satisfy EKU's rule: the requirement is coverage bought through EKU. Students doing clinicals at their own workplace should watch this most closely, since the job's coverage can feel like enough.
Why clinical sites care about student coverage
A clinical agency opens its doors and its patients to a student under a contract with that student's school, and those contracts set conditions on who may take part. EKU's undergraduate catalog says its BSN clinical requirements answer to Joint Commission rules and to its contracts with clinical agencies, and liability insurance bought through EKU is on that list.
The graduate handbook groups PLI with the RN license, the clinical contract and preceptor information form and site-specific requirements. Treat them as one bundle: a start date holds only when every piece in it is complete. Health systems publish their own gates on top. UK HealthCare's published process for advanced practice students from other schools requires a student agreement between UK HealthCare and the school to be on file before approval.

How much is EKU's professional liability insurance for nursing students?
EKU bills the charge with your tuition and fees, and the amount can change from year to year, so the reliable place to see it is your EKU account or Big E Central. Because the archived handbook says coverage is not pro-rated, the charge for a coverage year is the same whether your clinical course starts in August or in May.
Do post-MSN certificate students have to buy EKU's PLI?
Yes, going by EKU's documents. The catalog applies all MSN policies to post-graduate certificate students, and the archived MSN handbook applies the insurance rule to every concentration. If you already work as an NP in a different population, the coverage from that job is a separate matter, so ask your faculty how the two fit together.
Does EKU's liability insurance cover me at my own workplace?
It covers clinical experiences that are part of a scheduled EKU class, wherever your approved site is. Time at your employer's clinic falls under it when that clinic is your approved placement during the course, and falls outside it when you are working a paid shift. Keep the two clearly apart in your schedule and records; see clinicals where you work.
What happens to my PLI if I withdraw from a clinical course?
The handbook says coverage ends on withdrawal. Under the same handbook, withdrawing from an MSN course also counts as leaving the MSN program, so coming back means a readmission application, and you should plan on registering for coverage again in the year you return. Is professional liability insurance required for EKU's DNP?
It was in the most recent public DNP handbook (revised June 2020), which lists PLI through EKU with a current, unrestricted RN license and site-specific requirements for DNP Experience Hours. The same handbook adds that an EKU Photo ID must be worn at all clinical sites. Confirm the current rule with the DNP program before your first experience course.
