Kentucky clinicals for EKU nursing students: law, health systems and rural sites
Kentucky is EKU's home, and EKU's state authorization page clears it for every online nursing program with no condition attached. For a Kentucky resident the page holds no surprises: nothing to clear before you apply and no state condition on clinicals. Kentucky APRN law: the agreements behind every prescription
AANP's 2026 practice map rates Kentucky Reduced Practice, and prescribing is the reason. Kentucky ties an APRN's prescriptive authority to written collaborative agreements with a physician who holds a Kentucky license, and it adds extra rules for the first year. You will watch these agreements shape the day in any Kentucky practice where you train, and they will govern your own first years as a licensed NP.

The first year carries the tightest rules. To prescribe controlled substances, a newly licensed APRN must be employed by a health care entity or provider, and during the first year of a CAPA-CS the APRN and physician meet at least quarterly to go over the APRN's reverse KASPER report, the state's prescription monitoring record. KBN adds that the meetings continue "bi-annually" for the following three years, with written records, and that the collaborating physician must hold an active, unrestricted Kentucky license in the same or a similar specialty.
Licensure brings one more Kentucky step, a jurisprudence examination required by statute, and the Board expects APRN programs to teach Kentucky nursing law, from scope of practice to the Board's own role. The Board's summer 2026 legal update listed no change to the CAPA rules from that year's session; the only new nursing statute added a one-hour continuing education requirement on pediatric controlled-substance ingestion.
The preceptor rule, applied at home
Kentucky's regulation for APRN programs, 201 KAR 20:062, assigns the work of securing preceptors to the program, bars any requirement that a student find one, and gives students a voice in the process. EKU is a Kentucky-based program on the Board's approved list, so the rule applies to its nurse practitioner tracks. The Kentucky preceptor rule page sets out the text and its history.
For a student who lives in Kentucky, the voice the rule protects is worth using. You know which practice in your county sees the patients NSC 876 or NSC 886 is built around, which clinicians have taught students before, and which clinic days sit between your shifts. EKU's latest public MSN handbook (2021-22, now archived) gives that knowledge a channel: the clinical contract and preceptor information form students keep current before each clinical term. Confirm the current version with your faculty, and see using your input for what makes an option strong.
Kentucky also defines who can precept: any APRN, physician or PA who meets the regulation's standards. Because APRN licenses sit outside any operating compact, an NP precepting you at a Kentucky practice does so on a Kentucky APRN license, and the Board's guidance for online graduate programs expects Kentucky RN and APRN licensure of nurses who oversee or precept students in the state.
Proposing a Kentucky preceptor is a choice, not a duty. EKU's responsibility stays where the regulation puts it; your input simply hands EKU a strong option close to home.
What Kentucky health systems publish about NP students
Four metros anchor the state's larger systems: the Kentucky side of Louisville/Jefferson County (about 1.12 million residents in 2025), Lexington-Fayette (about 535,000), Northern Kentucky's share of the Cincinnati metro (about 475,000) and Bowling Green (about 197,000). Several systems post their own terms for advanced practice students from outside schools. Each speaks about students in general and none names EKU; no public source shows which of them, if any, has signed with EKU.

CHI Saint Joseph Health, Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Pikeville Medical Center and Owensboro Health publish no NP student process we could read, and Bluegrass Care Navigators says only that it partners with schools in its region for nursing internships. Rural and Appalachian Kentucky, from Madison County outward
EKU's home county is Appalachian. The Appalachian Regional Commission counts 54 Kentucky counties in Appalachia and, for fiscal 2027, rates 41 of them Distressed, 10 At-Risk and 3 Transitional: Madison, Clark and Garrard. Madison's overall rating held steady, yet its distressed census tracts rose from two in fiscal 2026 to six. Its neighbors Estill, Jackson and Rockcastle are Distressed in both years, and Madison belongs to the Bluegrass Area Development District.
Shortage designations trace the same map. HRSA lists a low-income population shortage area for Madison County in primary care (score 17) and in mental health (score 18), both flagged rural, and Kentucky has 256 primary care and 221 mental health designations in force. About 1.72 million Kentuckians live in nonmetro areas, served by 29 critical access hospitals, two rural emergency hospitals, 430 rural health clinics and 423 health center sites; the Kentucky Office of Rural Health is housed in UK's Center of Excellence in Rural Health.
Hospitals feel the gap too. The Kentucky Hospital Association's 2024 survey, using 2023 data, put the nurse practitioner vacancy rate at 9.8 percent, with psychiatric RN posts the hardest to fill at 24.4 percent. For EKU students this is the setting the program was designed around: NSC 876 is a concentrated rural primary care practicum, and rural mental health services suit NSC 886. Licensure and the compact for Kentucky clinicals
Kentucky has belonged to the current Nurse Licensure Compact since it took effect in January 2018. When Kentucky is your primary state of residence, your Kentucky RN license can be multistate, carrying RN practice privileges into the other compact states. The compact stops at the RN license: KBN notes that APRN licenses are not in a compact, and the APRN Compact, which Kentucky has not joined, needs seven enacting states before it takes effect. You train as an RN and apply for Kentucky APRN licensure after graduation.
EKU layers its own rules on top: a clean, unencumbered RN license from every state where you hold one, plus Nursys e-Notify enrollment at admission under the archived MSN handbook; RN license and Nursys covers both. For nurses licensed elsewhere who train in Kentucky, KBN points to the student exemption in KRS 314.101 and reads it as available when the school is a SARA institution. EKU has taken part in SARA since 2017.

Questions EKU students ask
Does UK HealthCare take nurse practitioner students from EKU?
UK HealthCare's public page speaks to outside schools in general and does not name EKU. It places students from UK's own programs first and approves nobody until the school's student agreement with UK HealthCare is on file. Whether EKU has one is not public, so ask your faculty before you put a UK HealthCare preceptor forward.
When does UK HealthCare accept advanced practice student requests?
The windows follow your clinical dates. Clinicals from January 1 to May 15 are requested October 15 to November 15; May 16 to July 31, March 15 to April 15; and August 1 to December 15, July 15 to August 15. A status email follows roughly four to six weeks before the start. The linked request form showed as closed in September 2026.
Is there a Kentucky tax credit for NP preceptors?
Kentucky has not enacted one. A 2022 House bill, HB 718, proposed a tax credit for primary care preceptors, APRNs in shortage areas among them, but it stalled in committee, and a 2017 Senate bill on preceptor incentives covered physicians only. Some other states have preceptor programs, and each state guide notes any that exist.
Do I need to live near Richmond to do EKU clinicals in Kentucky?
No. EKU's graduate nursing programs are online with no campus visits required, so your clinicals take place where you live, whether that is Paducah, Pikeville or Northern Kentucky. The Kentucky towns EKU mentions for clinical rotations, such as Corbin, Somerset and Lexington, describe placements for its on-campus BSN students rather than NP courses.
Will I need a collaborating physician as a new Kentucky NP?
For prescribing, yes. Before writing prescriptions for nonscheduled legend drugs you sign a CAPA-NS with a Kentucky physician, and controlled substances need a CAPA-CS on the Board's standard form. Each normally stays in place for four years of prescribing, and prescribing controlled substances in your first licensed year requires employment by a health care entity or provider.
