EKU's post-MSN PMHNP certificate: one application window, a full psychiatric clinical sequence
EKU's post-graduate PMHNP certificate adds the psychiatric-mental health specialty to a nurse's existing master's or doctorate. The catalog puts it at 34 credits including 9 prerequisite credits, applications open only from October to March 15 for every start term, and the clinicals are the psychiatric sequence: NSC 800 beside PMHNP I to III, then the NSC 886 internship. The long gap between applying and your first clinical term is time you can use.

What the certificate is and who it admits
The catalog frames the PMHNP certificate as a second-specialty route for nurses who have finished an MSN or higher. Think of a family NP who wants to treat more mental health conditions, or an MSN-prepared nurse leader moving into psychiatric practice. EKU delivers it online with no campus visits and describes its terms as accelerated 7-week terms.
Applicants bring a nursing master's or doctorate (MSN, DNP or PhD) from a nationally accredited school, a year of RN practice, and an RN license with no encumbrance issued by an approved state; any APRN license you hold must be active and unencumbered wherever it was issued. Once you are in, the certificate runs under the MSN rulebook, since EKU's catalog extends every MSN policy to certificate students: grades, attendance and clinical paperwork all follow the MSN standard.
34 credits, and a page that borrowed the FNP's numbers
In the 2026-27 catalog the certificate totals 34 credits, and that total already includes the three prerequisite courses. The certificate web page shows 25 to 34 in its header, which fits the catalog if you subtract prerequisites you bring with you. Its body text, though, says 22 to 32, the same range the FNP certificate page uses, and the page's link to degree requirements is labeled MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner. Both appear to carry over from the FNP page. Go by the catalog, and get your own total on a written plan of study.

The October to March 15 application window
This is the certificate's most unusual rule. EKU's page says the application window is open from October to March 15 for all terms, and it lists March 15 as the deadline for fall, spring and summer alike.

Read literally, a January start means applying by the March 15 roughly ten months earlier, so ask EKU admissions which January your application would feed. Either way, the window rewards planning: if you miss March 15, the next chance opens in October. The months between acceptance and your first NSC 800 term are the best time to settle a psychiatric preceptor option, and a summer start begins in June rather than the MSN's May.
Psychiatric clinicals: NSC 800 beside PMHNP I to III
The clinical path is identical to the MSN PMHNP. You enroll in NSC 800 Advanced Practice Role in pieces, one beside each of PMHNP I, II and III, reaching 8 credits by the end of PMHNP III, with NSC 881 Applied Psychopharmacology in the mix, and the sequence ends in NSC 886. EKU's last posted certificate plan (2023, archived) ran 6 semesters. The MSN PMHNP guide shows how the 8 credits were spread across the three courses.
What changes for many certificate students is the site. An FNP working in primary care, or a nurse leader in administration, usually needs a different setting for these hours: a clinic or program where a psychiatric clinician evaluates, diagnoses and manages psychiatric medications. Kentucky law lets physicians, physician assistants and APRNs all serve as NP preceptors; EKU has not published PMHNP-specific preceptor rules, so your faculty decide the fit.
NSC 886 and the hours EKU leaves unstated
The 5-credit PMHNP Internship finishes the certificate. Its catalog entry wants PMHNP III done plus seven credit hours of NSC 800, though the certificate itself calls for eight, and it still lists NSC 842, a course no longer in the MSN core, as a prerequisite or corequisite. Neither loose end is explained in public; your advisor can tell you how they are applied. The internship page covers the course itself.
EKU has published no psychiatric clinical hour figure anywhere we could find, for the MSN or the certificate, on current or archived pages. Before your first clinical term, get the required hours from your faculty, broken down by enrollment, and see PMHNP clinical hours for what is and is not known.
If you already hold an NP certification, your earlier clinical hours are not something to count on here. EKU has published no rule crediting them toward the PMHNP certificate, so plan for the full psychiatric sequence.
Decisions EKU makes one student at a time
- Prerequisite transfer. EKU's archived plan tied the start date to how
NSC 830,NSC 832andNSC 834transfer, which is also where the 25-credit low end comes from. - Pharmacology for current NPs. Under the 2021-22 MSN Student Handbook, whether an already-certified NP had to retake advanced pharmacology was an individual call.
- Health assessment mastery. MSN students proved it in the term right before
NSC 800; that handbook reviewed each post-MSN student separately instead.
Those handbook rules are from the last edition EKU posted, so confirm how your faculty apply them today. Each decision moves the term in which your psychiatric clinical begins, and with it the date your preceptor option needs to be ready.

Questions EKU students ask
Can a family nurse practitioner add the PMHNP specialty at EKU?
Yes. Adding a second specialty on top of a master's or doctorate is the certificate's stated purpose. An FNP still takes every psychiatric course and clinical, while the 2021-22 handbook treated a repeat of advanced pharmacology as an individual decision for NPs who already passed it. Expect to need a psychiatric site, since a primary care job rarely doubles as one.
Does the certificate cover child and adolescent psychiatry?
EKU's course list still includes NSC 883 Rural PMHNP Child Adolescent, a 3-credit course that requires current certification as an adult PMHNP. It is not part of the current certificate or MSN requirements. Ask your advisor how the certificate's clinicals address patients of different ages, and whether NSC 883 is offered at all.
Can I apply to the PMHNP certificate from outside Kentucky?
Often, yes. EKU's MSN licensure table covers both post-MSN certificates, and residents of eight states cannot currently enroll, among them Washington, Oregon, New York, Tennessee and Mississippi, the last because of clinical placement restrictions. From Massachusetts, EKU takes only FNP, PMHNP and DNP students. Check state authorization before the March 15 deadline.
Do certificate students buy liability insurance through EKU?
Expect to. Certificate students follow MSN policy, and the last posted MSN handbook (2021-22) required professional liability insurance bought through EKU for clinical courses, on a policy year that starts each August 15. EKU's 2023 curriculum plans also said it is required for clinical practicum courses. Confirm the current process with your faculty before NSC 800.
