Three facts get an EKU search moving: your program, the clinical course that comes next, and the town you call home. With those, a placement advisor studies what your area offers for that exact course. Filling in the form here is the quickest start, and every other channel lands with the same advisors.
Your EKU clinical plan
Program, clinical course, town and term. Add a preceptor you have in mind if there is one.
The three details that start a search
Your program. The FNP and PMHNP concentrations, their matching post-MSN certificates, the DNP and EKU's online RN to BSN each lead to a different kind of clinical site, so the program tells your placement advisor where to look first.
Your next clinical course and its term. NSC 800 pairs with your concentration courses and calls for a family primary care or psychiatric preceptor who can stay across several terms. NSC 876 points to rural primary care, NSC 886 to a psychiatric setting, and a DNP experience course to an organization able to host your DNP project. The term tells us how long the search has.
Your town and state. We search outward from home, so a city and state go a long way, along with the longest drive you would accept on a clinical day.
Worth adding, if you have it
- A preceptor, practice or clinic already on your mind. Kentucky's rule protects your input, and a name gives the search a head start.
- Whether you hope to do clinicals at your workplace, and in which unit or department.
- Each state that has issued you an RN license, because EKU expects all of them to be unencumbered.
- Whether your liability insurance through EKU is registered for the coverage year your clinical falls in.
- The weekdays you can give to clinicals around your shifts.
- Your plan of study or Degree Works audit, if the order of your courses is unclear.
Missing items are fine. Your placement advisor fills the gaps with you in the first conversation.

Writing from outside Kentucky
Many EKU online students live far from Richmond, and the search works the same way wherever EKU enrolls them. Before looking, we check your state against EKU's state authorization page. As of September 2026, eight states are closed to EKU's online MSN and post-MSN applicants: Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington. EKU also attaches conditions in a few other states, such as Missouri, where site contracts must be short-term.
EKU's catalog also asks students to let the university know where any supervised clinical outside Kentucky will take place, and a move to another state after admission needs your advisor's clearance first. Put your state in the form, and see the state authorization guide for the full list.
When your clinical course is weeks away
Write today, and lead with the EKU course number and the date it opens. A short runway changes our approach: a wider radius, practices known for quick student onboarding, and early attention to the site paperwork that usually takes longest.
Talk to your faculty as well. EKU's archived 2021-22 handbook treated clinical attendance strictly, so a delayed start is worth raising early rather than late. Kentucky's regulation defines a preceptor as an advanced practice registered nurse, a physician or a physician assistant. If you are one of them and might host an EKU student, use the form too and pick the preceptor entry at the end of the program menu. The preceptor page explains what hosting involves.
Details you send are used to reply and to organize your placement; the privacy policy sets out how. Leave health records aside for now: if a site needs a particular document later, you will be told which one.
Questions EKU students ask
Can I write before EKU admits me?
Yes. Applicants often want to know whether their area can support EKU's clinical courses before they commit. Tell us your town, the concentration you plan to apply for and the start you are aiming at, whether fall, spring or summer, and we will describe what a search there would involve.
I already have a preceptor in mind. Should I still get in touch?
It can still help. We check that the preceptor's practice fits the EKU course, that licenses match the site's state and that the site's onboarding is realistic, then prepare the details so what you submit through EKU's process is complete. The input guide explains where that fits.
What should I leave out of the form?
Health records, immunization files and copies of your license. The first message only needs your program, course, town and term. If a site later asks for a specific document, your placement advisor tells you exactly what it is and where it goes.
Can I ask a general question about EKU clinicals?
Yes. Students ask about Kentucky's preceptor rule, the order of NSC 800 and the internships, or which states EKU enrolls from. Ask in the chat or the form. For rules that live only in your course or handbook, we point you to your faculty or program coordinator.
