EKU online NP students in Arizona
Arizona residents can enroll in every EKU online nursing program, and EKU's licensure tables mark Arizona as Meets Requirements. The Arizona State Board of Nursing adds a school-level step, approval before any APRN student trains in the state, plus license standards for both you and your preceptor. AZBN approval sits with the school
AZBN's authority covers APRN education, not only pre-licensure programs, and it reaches an out-of-state school like EKU as soon as one of its NP students trains in Arizona. The Board's advisory opinion on out-of-state APRN clinicals, revised in November 2020, has every such program apply for approval before its first student begins a clinical rotation in the state. The review is shortened for a school whose APRN track already carries its home board's approval and whose national accreditation is current; EKU's MSN, DNP and post-graduate certificates are accredited by CCNE.
Once approved, a program keeps records AZBN can ask for: license status for everyone from the program director to each faculty member, preceptor and student, where each student is placed, and data for an annual survey or an audit. All of that is EKU's work, not yours, but it explains why an Arizona site moves faster when every license detail arrives complete. Ask your faculty how the approval stands for your track early in your search. The opinion is silent on RN to BSN programs.
License standards for you and your preceptor
Your own license for Arizona clinicals must be unencumbered, and AZBN takes either kind: one issued by Arizona or a multistate compact license. Arizona's compact membership dates to January 19, 2018, which is why a Kentucky multistate license works there while a single-state California or Nevada license does not. EKU adds that every license you hold must stay unencumbered; see RN license and Nursys.
Who can precept an EKU student in Arizona
- APRN preceptors: Arizona APRN certification on top of an unencumbered RN license, Arizona-issued or multistate.
- Physician preceptors: an unencumbered Arizona medical license.
- PAs count as preceptors under Kentucky's regulation for EKU, yet AZBN's opinion lists only APRNs and physicians; clear a PA with your faculty and see preceptor requirements.
- AANP rates Arizona full practice, so NP-owned practices belong on your list.
Phoenix, Tucson and the rest of the state
Two metros dominate: Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler, home to more than five million people in 2025, and Tucson, just over one million. Systems NP students there will recognize include Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Phoenix Children's, HonorHealth of Scottsdale, TMC Health in Tucson and Banner Health with its Banner - University Medicine academic centers. They are named here as landmarks; none has a published agreement with EKU.

Preceptors in Arizona could once apply to a state grant program for teaching graduate students, APRN students included, with rural primary care preferred. The JLBC's appropriations report for FY 2027 lists no money for either FY 2026 or FY 2027, and leftover funds reverted when June 2026 ended, so treat the program as unfunded.

Does Arizona require approval before EKU NP students start clinicals there?
Yes, at the program level. AZBN's advisory opinion has every APRN program apply for Board approval before any student begins clinicals in Arizona, with a shorter review for accredited out-of-state programs whose track is approved at home. The application belongs to EKU, so ask your faculty to confirm its status for your track before you settle on an Arizona preceptor.
Will my Kentucky multistate license cover Arizona clinicals?
Yes. Arizona is a compact state, and AZBN's opinion lets out-of-state APRN students train on a multistate license as long as it is unencumbered. Only a single-state license from outside the compact, such as California's, would mean getting an Arizona license first.
Is Arizona's preceptor grant still available?
It appears not. The legislature's budget staff report no appropriation for fiscal 2026 or 2027, and earlier unspent money went back to the General Fund on June 30, 2026. Build your preceptor conversation around the teaching itself and EKU's course goals instead.
Can I do the EKU DNP from Arizona?
Yes. Nothing on EKU's page limits the DNP for Arizona, which sits on the without-restrictions list. Your total must reach 1,000 clinical hours past the BSN, and EKU decides at admission how many of those you still owe it; the DNP clinical hours guide walks through how those hours are counted.
