EKU's California entry, program by program
EKU's state page treats California as a special case. The state does not belong to SARA, and EKU explains that California "is a fully exempt state which means each program must be considered independently." For nursing, EKU's note says the Board requires advanced practice programs to be approved before placing California students, and that its Master of Nursing programs, FNP and PMHNP certificates included, are approved programs that comply with CCR Section 1486.

The Board's own roster of out-of-state NP programs it has approved, checked September 25, 2026, shows EKU for its Family and Psych/Mental Health tracks. Applicants on a 2022 nursing forum traded conflicting answers about whether EKU took Californians; today's table settles that. For the doctorate, the graduate catalog says only that EKU is permitted to offer most distance programs to California residents, so DNP applicants should ask EKU directly.
What Section 1486 asks of your preceptor and site
California regulates out-of-state NP clinicals closely. Under 16 CCR Section 1486, a program based elsewhere needs the Board's prior approval before placing students, must teach California NP law, including the standardized procedure rules, and must use preceptors who meet Board standards. Approval is voted on at one of the Board's meetings, after which the school files a preceptor form for each person who precepts its students in California.
What that means for your placement
- Your preceptor carries a current California license in their field and is qualified for your NP population: family practice for the FNP, psychiatric-mental health for the PMHNP.
- A written agreement among the clinical agency, the preceptor and EKU defines the preceptor's role.
- The program orients each preceptor, and its faculty evaluate California preceptors at least every two years.
- AANP rates California restricted practice, with standardized protocol agreements required in select settings and procedures.
Where California NP students look for preceptors
The big names include Kaiser Permanente, based in Oakland and split into a northern and a southern region; Sutter Health, which covers the northern and central parts of the state; Stanford Health Care; Cedars-Sinai, the Los Angeles medical center; and University of California Health, whose six academic centers run from UC Davis Health to UC San Diego Health. None has a published arrangement with EKU.
Most Californians live in four metros: greater Los Angeles, the Riverside-San Bernardino area, the San Francisco-Oakland region and San Diego. Smaller practices outside the big systems also deserve a look, especially for NSC 876, which EKU describes as a concentrated rural primary care practicum; see EKU's rural focus.
A California RN license comes first
California is not a member of the multistate Nurse Licensure Compact, and NCSBN's June 2026 map shows no bill to join, so a compact license issued by Kentucky or another member state does not let you work as an RN here. Section 1486 spells out the NP student version: hold a current California RN license before you see patients in any California clinical. The same license is the gateway later, since California NP certification requires it first.

Questions EKU students ask
Is EKU approved by the California BRN for nurse practitioner clinicals?
Yes, for its NP programs. EKU's state page says its Master of Nursing programs, the FNP and PMHNP certificates among them, hold approval and meet 16 CCR Section 1486, and the BRN's approved roster showed EKU's Family and Psych/Mental Health tracks in September 2026. The approval belongs to EKU; your own California RN license is still required.
Can I enroll in the EKU DNP from California?
EKU's page does not say. Its California note covers the Master of Nursing programs only, the DNP has no licensure table, and the graduate catalog says just that EKU is permitted to offer most distance education programs to California residents. Put the question to EKU's online advisors before applying.
Does a Kentucky multistate license cover EKU clinicals in California?
No. Because California sits outside the compact, a multistate license from Kentucky or any member state carries no weight there, and Section 1486(d) ties clinical participation in California to an active California RN license for anyone enrolled in an NP program based elsewhere. Settle the license well before NSC 800 begins.
Can a physician precept me in California for EKU?
Possibly. Kentucky's definition, which governs EKU, allows an APRN, a physician or a physician assistant, and California asks for an active California license in the preceptor's own profession plus qualification in your NP category. EKU's own preceptor standards are not public, so confirm the choice with your faculty; see preceptor requirements.
