Connecticut and EKU: what's open and how clinicals work there

Connecticut residents can enroll in any of EKU's online nursing programs: EKU prints no Connecticut restriction, and both licensure tables list the state under Meets Requirements. EKU's online NP tracks carry no campus visits, so a Connecticut resident plans clinicals close to home. Placements outside Kentucky are logged with EKU by their physical location under the graduate catalog's state authorization section.

Connecticut's education rules and schools from other states

Out-of-state programs get what Connecticut calls deemed approval, provided the home board has approved the program, it meets Connecticut's curriculum rule for RN programs, and the home state's licensure bar sits at Connecticut's level or higher. Nothing in the rules asks such a program to apply or file notice separately, but clinical experience inside Connecticut agencies still has to follow the ratio and contract rules below.

A caveat: Connecticut wrote these rules for programs that lead to licensure, and they are silent on post-licensure and APRN education. Whether they bind EKU's NP courses is EKU's call.

Full practice and Connecticut's clinical landscape

Per AANP, Connecticut grants NPs full practice once they have logged three years and 2,000 hours working in collaboration with a physician. A preceptor past that mark practices independently, while a newer NP still collaborates. Either can be proposed, since the Kentucky regulation behind EKU's programs lets an APRN, physician or physician assistant precept and EKU approves each preceptor itself.

Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford is the biggest metro at about 1.17 million people, with New Haven, Waterbury-Shelton and Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury next. Trinity Health Of New England, Yale New Haven Health, UConn Health and Hartford HealthCare are among the state's systems, and western Connecticut's former Nuvance hospitals, Danbury Hospital included, now belong to Northwell Health, a New York system. Licensing since Connecticut joined the compact

Multistate licenses have been valid in Connecticut since October 1, 2025, when the state's compact participation began. From then on your license can come from Connecticut or be a multistate license issued by the compact state you call home, which widens the options for nurses in nearby compact states. Questions EKU students ask

Does Connecticut's two-students-per-preceptor ratio affect me?

If the ratio rules reach EKU's NP courses, a single preceptor could take at most two students at once, which matters in busy practices that host several schools. Because Connecticut's regulations do not speak to APRN programs directly, ask EKU how it applies them; your placement advisor confirms a preceptor's current student load up front.

Can I enroll in EKU's post-MSN PMHNP certificate from Connecticut?

Yes. The MSN licensure table, which EKU applies to both post-MSN certificates, lists Connecticut as meeting requirements, and there is no Connecticut nursing note. The certificate uses the same psychiatric clinical courses as the MSN, ending in NSC 886. See the post-MSN PMHNP guide.

Can my Connecticut hospital job double as my EKU clinical site?

Possibly. EKU once featured an FNP graduate who picked EKU in part for the chance to train at her own workplace, yet no current MSN rule on employer sites is public, for example whether a different unit or supervisor is needed. Is EKU's DNP open to Connecticut nurses?

Yes. Connecticut is on EKU's unrestricted SARA list, with no DNP caveat. The doctorate is post-master's and asks for at least 1,000 documented clinical hours past the BSN in total; EKU decides at admission how many remain, and a project inside your own organization is welcome.
