Wyoming residents in EKU's online nursing programs
Every online nursing program EKU runs is open to Wyoming residents: the RN to BSN, the MSN FNP and PMHNP, the DNP and both post-MSN certificates. EKU counts Wyoming among its unrestricted SARA states, and both licensure tables say Meets Requirements. The step worth knowing about is Wyoming's own: its Board of Nursing wants written notice from EKU whenever a student will train in the state.

Wyoming's notice rule for graduate clinicals
Wyoming's Board of Nursing, in its Chapter 6 rules, starts with a threshold for any school based outside the state: SARA approval, or registration with the state's Department of Education. The Board then splits programs in two. LPN and RN pre-licensure schools must ask its permission. Post-licensure programs, a group that covers the MSN, the DNP, APRN tracks and the RN to BSN, skip approval but owe the Board two things:
- A written noticeWhen an EKU student is about to train at a Wyoming site, EKU sends the Board a letter saying so; the Board even supplies a sample cover letter.
- A signed facility contractThe facility and EKU put their arrangement in a signed contract before your first clinical day, and EKU holds a copy for the Board.
Both are EKU's tasks, and neither requires you to contact the Board. They do mean a Wyoming site should be agreed with time to spare, so EKU can send the notice and sign the contract before your term; clinical agency agreements covers what goes into a site contract.
Finding preceptors across a rural state
Wyoming's population gathers in the Cheyenne and Casper metros and the Gillette micropolitan area. Casper has Banner Wyoming Medical Center and Gillette has Campbell County Health, while Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, Sheridan Memorial Hospital and Laramie's Ivinson Memorial Hospital, a UCHealth affiliate, fill out the list. EKU publishes no Wyoming clinical partners, so these are examples of where the state's clinicians practice rather than sites waiting for EKU students.
For FNP students, a family practice in a Wyoming town fits EKU's own description of NSC 876, the FNP Internship, as a concentrated rural primary care practicum. PMHNP students need a psychiatric preceptor for NSC 886 and the PMHNP sequence, so the real question is how far you can travel for the right specialty.
Why the Colorado border matters
Southern Wyoming borders Colorado, and for a nurse in Cheyenne or Laramie a clinic across the line can look like the obvious choice. EKU's Colorado entry rules out clinical practicum anywhere in Colorado, so a site there is off the table even when home is in Wyoming. Licensure: Wyoming and the two compacts
For RN licenses, Wyoming is a Nurse Licensure Compact member, in force there since January 2018, so your home compact state's multistate license is good at a Wyoming site. Wyoming has also adopted the APRN Compact, codified in Title 33 of its statutes, but that compact is idle: it needs seven states, only five have acted, and NCSBN said in May 2026 that its board had told staff to redesign it. Questions EKU students ask
Is EKU's RN to BSN open to Wyoming nurses, and does the notice rule apply?
Yes on both counts. The RN to BSN table lists Wyoming as Meets Requirements, and RN to BSN is one of the post-licensure program types the Board expects written notice for. What does a Wyoming clinical facility sign?
The facility signs a written contract with EKU before your clinicals begin, and EKU holds a copy for the Board. EKU's own paperwork is separate: the archived 2021-22 MSN handbook had MSN students update the "Clinical contract and preceptor information form" every semester, and your placement advisor supplies the preceptor details it asks for.
What if my preceptor leaves partway through a Wyoming term?
Tell your faculty straight away. Under the archived MSN handbook's attendance rule, a student who misses over two clinical experiences may fail, so gaps matter. A replacement site in Wyoming needs its own notice and facility contract, which is why your placement advisor keeps a backup preceptor in view while you are still in the term.
Will EKU's MSN qualify me for a Wyoming APRN license?
EKU's MSN licensure table places Wyoming under Meets Requirements, meaning EKU has judged the program to fit Wyoming's education rules for licensure. The final call on your application belongs to the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, so confirm its current steps before your last clinical course ends.
