EKU places New Mexico among its SARA member states without restrictions. Go by EKU's own page for your status, and revisit it ahead of every clinical course, because EKU revises it during the year. The state authorization guide explains how the tables are built.
New Mexico's clinical placement approval rule
New Mexico's rule 16.12.3.11(A)(2) NMAC turns on duration: once a program's clinical or field experience in the state lasts beyond one semester, the program is to apply to the board for clinical placement approval, and a program approved by a board elsewhere has to satisfy the part's own minimum standards (16.12.3.12 NMAC). The part is written for programs preparing people for a New Mexico license and never singles out RN to BSN or APRN programs.
So the text leaves open how it applies to EKU. The trigger itself is plain: clinical experience in New Mexico lasting beyond one semester. EKU's NP clinical sequence runs over several terms, with NSC 800 taken alongside FNP I through III or PMHNP I through III before the internship, so raise the rule with your faculty early and let EKU decide how it applies. Separately, EKU's graduate catalog wants the physical address of any supervised placement you do outside Kentucky.
Full practice and New Mexico's preceptor standard
AANP rates New Mexico as a full practice state, a contrast with neighboring Texas and Oklahoma, which it rates restricted. In AANP's terms, New Mexico NPs practice under the nursing board's licensure authority alone, so no physician agreement sits behind your NP preceptor.
In New Mexico's education rules (16.12.3.7 NMAC), the clinical preceptor must bring two years or more of nursing experience plus licensure no lower than the level the student is studying for. Programs from other states that gain clinical placement approval are held to the same minimums. Kentucky's rule for APRN programs, which binds EKU, is broader and also counts physicians and physician assistants. Where the two differ, check with your faculty before proposing a physician or PA.
Kentucky's regulation also obliges EKU to secure every NP preceptor its students need while letting you contribute to the choice. The Kentucky rule covers that, and preceptor requirements sets out what EKU has published.
Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington
Albuquerque is New Mexico's largest metro, home to about 925,000 people, and the Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington metros each hold under a quarter of that. CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center serves Santa Fe; Presbyterian Healthcare Services is another name, as is Lovelace Health System, and UNM Health System runs New Mexico's only academic medical center. They are named to orient a search, not as sites for EKU students.
EKU's catalog describes the NSC 876 FNP Internship as rural primary care, so a clinic in one of New Mexico's smaller communities can be a natural fit. If you live near the Colorado line, keep your site on the New Mexico side: EKU states that it is not authorized to conduct clinical practicum in Colorado.
Licensing for New Mexico clinicals
Compact membership for New Mexico dates to January 19, 2018. Multistate licenses come from the New Mexico board, which added a fee for them effective June 1, 2026; with a multistate license you can also work in other compact states such as Kentucky. New Mexico has not enacted the APRN Compact. EKU requires a clean, unencumbered record on each RN license you hold, and a license good in whichever state hosts your site; RN license and Nursys covers both.

Questions EKU students ask
Can I take EKU's online DNP while living in New Mexico?
You can. New Mexico carries no DNP limit on EKU's page, and the DNP, which leads to no license, has no licensure table to check. EKU describes DNP projects as work done in your own organization or community, which suits a New Mexico nurse leader, and practice sites needed EKU's approval course by course under the archived 2020 DNP handbook.
Can I do EKU clinicals in Arizona or Texas instead?
EKU's published material is silent on training in a neighboring state, so start with your faculty. Arizona and Texas both show Meets Requirements in EKU's MSN table. Texas is a restricted-practice state, which changes how an NP preceptor prescribes, and the site's state has to recognize your RN license. See the Texas guide.
Can New Mexico nurses take EKU's online RN to BSN?
Yes. EKU's RN to BSN table lists New Mexico as Meets Requirements, and New Mexico's clinical placement rule does not single out RN to BSN programs. The program has one clinical course, NSC 442C; the RN to BSN clinical guide covers its hours and how to pick a setting.
What if I move to New Mexico during my EKU program?
Talk to your advisor first. EKU cautions that a move after you are admitted can cost you your place in the program. New Mexico is open to every EKU nursing program, so EKU's page does not bar the move, but your clinical site, your license and the state's clinical placement rule all need working out with EKU before you go.
