Mississippi and EKU: what changed for NP students in 2026
EKU says it is currently not authorized to enroll students living in Mississippi in its online MSN FNP, MSN PMHNP or post-MSN certificates, and it names clinical placement restrictions as the reason. The change appeared between May 20 and June 17, 2026. EKU still lists the RN to BSN and the DNP as open, though it leaves one DNP question unanswered.

EKU's Mississippi status by program
Mississippi joined the list of eight states closed to EKU's online NP tracks in 2026. Its closure comes from a footnote in EKU's MSN licensure table rather than from a state note, which is why it reaches the MSN and the certificates but not the other programs.

EKU's footnote says its graduates may qualify for licensure in Mississippi. The block falls on enrolling residents because of clinical placement restrictions, not on the credential, and Mississippi still appears on EKU's list of SARA states without restrictions.
When the change happened, and what Mississippi asks of outside programs
Wayback snapshots of EKU's page from January 16, March 10 and May 20, 2026 kept Mississippi in the Meets column of the MSN table. The June 17 snapshot carries the Unable to Determine mark and the not-authorized footnote, and the September 2026 page still does.
EKU does not spell out which restrictions it means, but Mississippi's framework shows what a clinical placement there involves for a school based elsewhere. Nursing degree programs answer to Mississippi's Institutions of Higher Learning board (IHL), not to the Mississippi Board of Nursing. IHL counts in-state practicums as physical presence and expects outside programs offering them to meet Mississippi standards, triggering an IHL Nursing Education review that may take as long as three months. Its procedures manual asks programs controlled outside Mississippi to seek that review at least four months ahead.
What it means if you live in Mississippi
- Applying for the FNP, PMHNP or a post-MSN certificate: EKU's page says it cannot enroll you while you live in Mississippi. Speak with EKU's online advisors first; the page offers no date for a change.
- Admitted before June 2026: the footnote speaks to enrolling and is silent on students already in a program. Get your advisor's answer, in writing, before your next clinical term.
- Planning a move: EKU goes by where you live, and its page warns that a move made once you have applied or been admitted can cost you your place, so clear it with an advisor first.
- RN to BSN: open under EKU's table. IHL's review covers undergraduate programs with Mississippi clinicals too, so ask EKU how it handles the

Licensing and NP practice in Mississippi
IHL's standards put one license rule on graduate clinical students: in an APRN course or any other graduate clinical, you need an unencumbered RN license for the state where the hours happen, and outside programs must meet the same standard. Mississippi has been in the Nurse Licensure Compact from January 19, 2018. EKU's own license rules are on the RN license and Nursys page.
AANP gives Mississippi a reduced rating: an NP there works in a collaborative relationship, approved by the board, with a physician or dentist licensed in the state. Jackson, Gulfport-Biloxi, Hattiesburg and the Mississippi side of greater Memphis are the main population centers, and large systems include UMMC, Forrest Health, Singing River Health System and North Mississippi Health Services.

Can I start EKU's online FNP while living in Mississippi?
Not currently. Since mid-2026, EKU's MSN licensure table marks Mississippi as Unable to Determine, and a footnote says EKU is not authorized to enroll students living there because of clinical placement restrictions. The same table governs the PMHNP and both post-MSN certificates. EKU's online advisors are the people to ask about timing.
Why did EKU stop enrolling Mississippi NP students?
EKU's page gives one reason, clinical placement restrictions, and no further detail. Mississippi's IHL review for outside programs that place students in the state is useful background, but EKU does not say it is the cause, so treat any fuller explanation as unconfirmed unless EKU gives it to you directly.
Could an EKU graduate get licensed as an NP in Mississippi later?
EKU's footnote says its graduates may qualify for licensure in Mississippi; the restriction concerns enrolling students who live there. If you earn an EKU MSN while living in an open state and move afterward, check the Mississippi Board of Nursing's current APRN requirements when you apply.
Was Mississippi always closed to EKU's online NP programs?
No. EKU listed Mississippi as meeting requirements for the MSN into spring 2026, so older summaries of EKU's state rules may still show it as open. Go by EKU's own page, last modified in September 2026, and ask an advisor if anything you read elsewhere looks inconsistent.
