EKU enrolls Alabama residents across its online nursing programs, and both of its licensure tables mark Alabama as Meets Requirements. The condition is one EKU carries: it must notify Alabama and pay a fee by January 1 of each year in which it plans clinical placements there. Alabama sits on EKU's list of SARA states with special restrictions, and EKU attaches the same clinical notice to every nursing program it offers online. Because those programs need no campus visits, an Alabama resident's clinical hours are Alabama hours, so the notice reaches each clinical course.

How an Alabama clinical gets cleared
- EKU's yearly notice and feeEKU tells Alabama by January 1 that it plans clinicals there that year and pays the out-of-state program fee, which the Alabama Board of Nursing treats as a non-refundable, calendar-year charge per program.
- A letter of intent, filed aheadAlabama's rule 610-X-3-.09 then asks the program for a letter of intent plus approval paperwork no later than 15 days before clinical learning starts. That filing identifies you and your license number, the clinical supervisor with a license number, and the facility, backed by a statement from the facility's top nursing officer.
- Board approval before the first shiftUntil the Board approves and the fee is paid, no student may start clinicals in Alabama, so your first day depends on both.
Put together, an Alabama placement has a calendar to it. A clinical course beginning in January needs its Alabama site known in the fall, while EKU's notice for the new year is still ahead, and any site needs its details settled well ahead of the 15-day filing deadline.
Alabama NP practice and where students look
Alabama holds AANP's reduced rating: each NP needs a state-regulated physician collaboration covering at least part of practice, and oversight is split between the nursing board and the medical examiners board.
The four biggest metros are Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery. UAB Medicine and Huntsville Hospital Health System are major systems; Mobile has Infirmary Health and the academic USA Health, and Montgomery has Baptist Health. Treat those as starting points for a search, not as sites with any EKU tie.
Alabama's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program offers a state income tax credit to preceptors in underserved rural communities, yet only for rotations serving schools located in Alabama, so an EKU rotation does not qualify.
The license you need for Alabama hours
If you do clinicals in Alabama as a post-licensure student, the Board wants you to hold either an Alabama RN license or a compact state's multistate license, valid and unencumbered either way. Alabama started honoring multistate licenses on January 1, 2020, and it has no APRN Compact law. EKU's Alabama note puts the obligation on the program: it must notify the state and pay a fee by January 1 of any year it plans to place students in clinicals there. The Alabama Board of Nursing describes the fee as charged per program or institution and covering a calendar year, rather than charged per student.
Can I start EKU clinicals in Alabama in the middle of the year?
EKU's note ties its notice to each year in which it plans Alabama clinicals, so a mid-year start depends first on whether EKU filed for that year, then on the letter of intent and the Board's approval. Ask your faculty as soon as you know you want an Alabama site, and share the practice details early.
Will an EKU FNP qualify me for NP practice in Alabama?
EKU's MSN licensure table says Meets Requirements for Alabama. EKU's note adds that the state's approval of a program is not the same as eligibility for advanced practice approval: Alabama looks at national certification, graduation from a specific type of program, and a completed application. Check the Alabama Board of Nursing's current requirements before you choose a track.
Does the Alabama condition cover EKU's DNP and RN to BSN?
Yes. EKU's Alabama note covers the doctorate and the RN to BSN too, not only the NP tracks. The Alabama Board's license requirement also lists RN to BSN, MSN and DNP students by name, so any EKU clinical hours in Alabama call for a license that is valid there.
