What EKU publishes for Iowa
One detail on EKU's page trips up Iowa applicants. Iowa appears among the SARA states EKU flags for special restrictions, yet its only note sends readers to EKU's Military Activation and Course Completion policy. That is a university policy pointer, not a nursing rule, so it does not narrow which EKU nursing programs an Iowa resident can join.

Iowa's expectations of out-of-state programs
Iowa's Board of Nursing leaves the approval of programs headquartered elsewhere to their home states, yet its out-of-state page still hands those programs a to-do list for Iowa placements. EKU must be cleared to operate in Iowa by the Bureau of Iowa College Aid, follow Iowa statutes on top of Kentucky's, answer the Board's data requests, and see that its faculty and preceptors in Iowa are licensed in Iowa or hold a multistate license.
Clinical contracts are the other item. Iowa wants each one to assign every party's duties, keep student learning under faculty direction, and allow the contract to be reviewed yearly or ended, so an Iowa clinic that agrees to host you still needs an agreement with EKU first (clinical agency agreements).
Choosing an Iowa preceptor and site
Under 481 IAC 616.16, Iowa's rule for preceptorships in ARNP programs, the bulk of a student's precepted time should be with a physician, or with an ARNP working in the student's own role and population focus, licensed in the state where they work and bound by a written agreement reviewed each year. Iowa's out-of-state page leaves preceptor approval with the school and the facility together. For you: a family practice ARNP or physician in FNP courses, a psychiatric clinician for the PMHNP sequence and NSC 886, then EKU's sign-off, under criteria your faculty can confirm.
Care in Iowa is concentrated in networks such as University of Iowa Health Care, MercyOne and UnityPoint Health, and in the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City metros plus Davenport, whose metro crosses into Illinois. Read that as a map of where Iowa care is delivered, not a list of EKU partners; EKU names none publicly. Small-town family practices beyond those metros suit the rural primary care focus of the NSC 876 FNP Internship.
Iowa also rewards the clinician: a nurse who precepts a student for 60 hours or more in a structured program can claim 6 contact hours toward renewal, backed by the school's documentation.
Licensing for clinicals in Iowa
Iowa's membership in the Nurse Licensure Compact dates from early 2018. For post-licensure students, its Board requires a current Iowa license or a current multistate one during Iowa clinicals, plus practice that follows the Iowa Code. Iowa Code 152.1 excuses students without a license who practice nursing as part of their studies; a nurse already licensed as an RN, LPN or ARNP in any state falls outside that exemption.
EKU layers on its own requirement: every RN license you hold must be unencumbered, and its archived 2021-22 MSN handbook had students consent to Nursys e-Notify at admission. Iowa has not enacted the APRN Compact. Details are on RN license and Nursys.

Can I do EKU clinicals at the Iowa clinic where I work?
Nothing on EKU's public pages forbids it for MSN students; our workplace clinicals page gathers EKU's statements on the topic. The clinic still needs an agreement with EKU that meets Iowa's contract terms, the preceptor must fit your course focus, and EKU approves both. If the preceptor would be your usual supervisor, raise that with your faculty early.
I live in another compact state. Can my clinical site be in Iowa?
Your compact home state's multistate license works for post-licensure clinicals in Iowa. The deciding questions sit with EKU: it must enroll students from your home state, and its graduate catalog has you report the location of any supervised clinical outside Kentucky. Check your home state's guide first, for example Nebraska.
How many clinical hours does EKU's DNP need from an Iowa student?
The same as from anyone else: EKU's catalog sets a floor of 1,000 documented post-BSN clinical hours, and a review at admission decides how many you still need to complete at EKU. Iowa adds no DNP restriction on EKU's page. The DNP guide covers the project and the site approval step.
What happens if I move out of Iowa mid-program?
A move after you apply or enroll can cost you your place in the program, EKU cautions, and the graduate catalog wants any change of location reported. Speak to your advisor before you move, and check the new state's entry first, because EKU's online MSN is closed to residents of eight states.
