EKU nurse practitioner clinicals for Idaho students
Idaho is fully open to EKU's online nursing programs. The FNP, PMHNP, post-MSN certificates, DNP and RN to BSN all carry no restriction, and both licensure tables say Meets Requirements. Under Idaho's rules, an enrolled APRN student with a valid RN license may work at the advanced level while training, so your real task is the right preceptor, placed on the Idaho side of two closed neighbors.

That makes Idaho one of the simpler entries on EKU's page, which is not true of its western neighbors: Oregon and Washington are both closed to EKU's online NP programs.
Idaho's rules for APRN students from other states
Both of Idaho's program-approval provisions (Board rule IDAPA 24.34.01.150 and Idaho Code section 54-1406) address schools that operate in Idaho, and neither has a clause specific to clinicals set up by schools based elsewhere. For out-of-state and online programs, the Board's web page asks schools to contact DOPL, the state's professional licensing division, about requirements. That inquiry is the school's to make rather than yours.
The rule that speaks to you is IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a. Under it, you may perform APRN-level work during your EKU coursework, provided you are a matriculated student in a nationally accredited APRN program, hold a current RN license or multistate privilege for Idaho, and the work is built into your curriculum. EKU's MSN, DNP and post-graduate certificates hold CCNE accreditation. Idaho Code 54-1412 adds a general licensing exemption for students in approved programs whose work is part of their instruction.
Since 2024, a Board education policy has required each clinical preceptor's license to match or outrank the license you are pursuing. Kentucky law, which governs EKU's program, counts APRNs, physicians and physician assistants as preceptors, so run a PA option past your faculty with both standards in mind. AANP rates Idaho full practice, which opens NP-owned practices as settings to propose.
Preceptor settings from Boise to Coeur d'Alene
Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, along with the St. Luke's and Saint Alphonsus systems, gives a sense of where Idaho NP students look. The Boise City metro, with about 864,000 residents in 2025, is the largest population center; Coeur d'Alene is a distant second, ahead of Idaho Falls and Twin Falls. None of these systems has a published tie to EKU; they simply mark the landscape.
Beyond those four metros, rural practices can suit NSC 876, which EKU calls a concentrated rural primary care practicum. A clinic in your own county can be a strong option to put forward, and EKU's rural focus explains why it fits.
Near the Washington line? Keep your clinical site in Idaho. WABON must approve an out-of-state school before it places anyone in Washington, it reserves those approved placements for Washington residents, and EKU's tables put Washington under Does Not Meet. Talk to your faculty before looking at any site across a state line.
Your license for Idaho clinicals
Idaho put the Nurse Licensure Compact into effect on January 19, 2018. A compact license from whichever member state you call home therefore covers practice in Idaho, and Idaho-issued multistate licenses work across the other member states. EKU still expects the license to be unencumbered in every state that has issued you one, and its most recent public MSN handbook adds Nursys e-Notify at admission; the RN license guide has both.
The graduate catalog also requires you to notify EKU where any out-of-Kentucky supervised field placement physically happens, which for you means your Idaho site's address.

Which RN license covers EKU clinicals in Idaho?
An Idaho license works, and so does a multistate license from your compact home state, because Idaho has belonged to the compact since 2018. Idaho's APRN student rule speaks of a current license or privilege to practice in Idaho, and a compact license carries that privilege. EKU also asks that every license you hold be unencumbered.
Does Idaho require EKU to get approval before I start clinicals?
Idaho's program rules name no specific approval step for clinicals arranged by schools from other states, and the Board's page directs those schools to DOPL. Any exchange with the Board is between EKU and DOPL, so ask your faculty whether anything is needed for your site before your first clinical day.
Can I take the EKU DNP while living in Idaho?
Yes. Idaho is on EKU's list of states without restrictions, and EKU publishes no DNP limit for it. The DNP requires at least 1,000 clinical hours beyond the BSN, with the hours owed at EKU set at admission, and EKU's last public DNP handbook asked for a site approval form for each clinical course; the DNP guide explains both.
How does Idaho's full practice status affect my preceptor search?
It widens it. AANP's 2026 map lists Idaho as full practice, so NP-led practices are real options alongside physician offices and system clinics. You can put one forward to EKU as long as the preceptor's license meets Idaho's education policy and passes EKU's review.
