EKU NP clinicals in Alaska: the registration step and the search
Alaska is open for every EKU online nursing program, and EKU Online has already featured an Alaska FNP graduate who did her clinicals where she worked. The Alaska-specific step lands on you: before your first clinical day, the Alaska Board of Nursing registers you personally for your preceptorship, rather than approving EKU as a school.

Registering your preceptorship with the Alaska Board
An EKU NP student training in Alaska registers personally with the state's Board of Nursing. The authority is rule 12 AAC 44.460, and under the Board's FAQ an APRN student from a program outside Alaska applies for a preceptorship before beginning. What gets registered is you and your preceptorship, not EKU as a school.

- The agreementA copy of the preceptorship arrangement the Board approves, with EKU, the clinical facility, your preceptor and you as parties.
- The form and feeFile Alaska's form 08-4253 and expect a fee the Board keeps even if plans change.
- The clockTwelve months is the ceiling, an earlier end to your preceptorship ends the registration too, and one renewal is allowed.
The agreement has to exist before you can register, so settle your preceptor and site early enough for EKU's paperwork and then the Board's.
Who can precept you, and where students look
The preceptor Alaska's form describes is an APRN or physician, licensed or privileged to practice with a clean record, in a practice focus close to your EKU track, who supervises, teaches and evaluates you in person at the site. Physician assistants also qualify under the Kentucky rule EKU follows, but Alaska's form names only APRNs and physicians, so raise a PA option with your faculty first. Anchorage has the biggest cluster: Providence Alaska Medical Center, run by the Renton, Washington-based system that is Alaska's largest hospital operator, the tribal Alaska Native Medical Center, and Alaska Regional Hospital, an HCA facility. In Palmer the hospital is Mat-Su Regional Medical Center; Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Tanana Valley Clinic are both run by Foundation Health Partners in Fairbanks. Your license: Alaska is outside the compact
No compact license reaches Alaska yet. According to the Board, lawmakers have not passed a compact bill, and its page lists House Bill 131 and Senate Bill 124 from the 2025-2026 session as still pending. Until one becomes law, a multistate license from Kentucky or elsewhere gives no privilege to work as an RN in Alaska, even though the preceptorship registration accepts an out-of-state RN license in good standing.
EKU looks for a license valid where you train and unencumbered everywhere you hold one, so ask your faculty which license should cover your Alaska clinicals; the RN license guide explains EKU's side. RN to BSN students have it easier: the Board asks only for a nationally accredited school approved where it is based, which for EKU is Kentucky, and a current, unencumbered RN license from any US state or territory.

Questions EKU students ask
Is there an Alaska filing I have to make as an EKU NP student?
Yes: the APRN preceptorship registration under 12 AAC 44.460. It is personal to you, costs a fee the Board does not return, includes a copy of your preceptorship agreement, and stays valid for a year at most, with a single renewal.
Will one Alaska registration cover NSC 800 and my internship?
It depends on your dates and your preceptors. Registration stops at 12 months, or sooner if that preceptorship finishes first, and only one renewal is possible. Lay your NSC 800 and internship terms over that window, and check with the Board whether moving to a new preceptor means filing again.
Does my EKU clinical faculty need an Alaska license?
Only past a threshold. Alaska's rule 12 AAC 44.090(h) sets a line of 20 working days per licensing period: once an out-of-state instructor's time grading Alaska clinical work, plus any other nursing teaching or consulting in the state, passes it, that instructor needs an Alaska RN license. EKU manages that, not you.
Can I do EKU clinicals at the Alaska clinic where I already work?
EKU publishes no MSN rule for or against it, and its 2021 Alaska graduate story describes exactly that. Questions EKU has not answered publicly, such as whether your preceptor may be your supervisor or whether paid hours count, need your faculty's answer first; the workplace guide lists them.
