New Jersey guide for EKU nursing students
Every online EKU nursing program is open to New Jersey residents: EKU's page attaches no New Jersey condition, and both licensure tables read Meets Requirements. The live issue in New Jersey is its own practice law. A bill signed on March 30, 2026 lets seasoned APNs in primary or behavioral health care work without a joint protocol, which changes the way many potential preceptors practice.

Since EKU's online NP tracks require no trips to Richmond, a New Jersey student completes clinical hours near home. Any supervised field placement outside Kentucky has to be reported to EKU by location, under the graduate catalog's state authorization rules.
Joint protocols after the 2026 law
AANP's 2026 map still lists New Jersey as reduced practice. Nurse practitioners, called APNs in New Jersey law, may prescribe drugs or devices only with a joint protocol in place alongside a physician who collaborates with them. S2996/A4052 carves out APNs with more than 5,000 hours of licensed, active advanced practice in their population: they may now deliver primary or behavioral health care without one, general obstetrics and elective aesthetic or cosmetic services excepted. Every other APN still works under a protocol, and the COVID-era waiver of joint protocols ended in April 2026.
For an EKU student this is context, not a hurdle. A veteran family or psychiatric NP may now run an independent primary care or behavioral health practice, a setting that suits NSC 876 or NSC 886, while newer APNs keep precepting under protocols. Either kind of preceptor can be proposed, and EKU approves each one against its own criteria.
Where New Jersey NP students train
New Jersey's population clusters in two big metros: about 7.1 million of its residents are counted in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area, about 1.4 million in Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, and far fewer in Trenton-Princeton or Atlantic City-Hammonton. Among the large systems are Cooper University Health Care, based in Camden, along with Virtua Health, Atlantic Health System, RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health. They show where students look; each system settles student requests its own way.
Our research found nothing in the New Jersey Board of Nursing's rules that makes an out-of-state school give notice or win approval before placing students in the state. The Board's accreditation chapter, N.J.A.C. 13:37, reaches programs at institutions the state's higher education commission licenses; its clinical-agency section deals with the opposite situation, New Jersey schools using agencies in other states. Because the Board's site blocked review during that research, ask your faculty whether EKU has any New Jersey step to complete.
Your license for New Jersey clinicals
New Jersey has honored multistate licenses since its compact start date of November 15, 2021. If you live there, your New Jersey license covers a New Jersey site; if you live in another compact state, the multistate license your home state issued does the same job.
EKU's own requirement sits on top of the state's. The 2021-22 MSN Student Handbook, the last one EKU posted, asked for an unencumbered RN license in every state that has licensed you and consent to Nursys e-Notify at admission; confirm the current handbook with your program coordinator. Questions EKU students ask
Can a New Jersey APN without a joint protocol precept an EKU student?
Nothing in the 2026 law or on EKU's public pages ties precepting to protocol status. The Kentucky regulation EKU follows lets an APRN, a physician or a physician assistant precept, and EKU applies its own criteria, which are not public. If I live in New Jersey, can I do EKU clinicals in New York City?
Plan on New Jersey sites instead. EKU's New York note bars field placements for licensure programs in New York without specific New York Board approval, and NYSED lets out-of-state nursing programs place students only once NYSED has registered or approved them. Living in Pennsylvania, could I use my own license at a Camden-area site?
Pennsylvania completed its compact implementation in July 2025, so a Pennsylvania multistate license covers practice in New Jersey. EKU's public pages set no rule about training in a different state from the one you live in, so check with your faculty before proposing a New Jersey site, and report its location to EKU.
Does EKU's online RN to BSN accept New Jersey nurses?
Yes. The RN-BSN licensure table shows New Jersey as meeting requirements, with no New Jersey note. The program has one clinical course, NSC 442C, and EKU has said students can complete the capstone clinical project at their current workplace; the archived 2023-24 RN-BSN handbook still required an affiliation agreement there.
